Liverworts and mosses are primitive plants that lack true roots with water and nutrients being absorbed by the vegetative organs of the plant. There are several types of moss that colonise borders. These mosses may form large, coarse, loose, green or yellowish-green tufts, densely matted tufts, or compact green cushions.
Mosses contribute to soil biodiversity and function. Soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low.
Mosses are among the most widely distributed organisms on land.
